History of Blue Mountain Coffee

The Jamaica's climate was so conducive to coffee production and the coffee industry expanded rapidly from St. Andrew to the Blue Mountains. Then it was also grown in the hills of the parishes of Manchester, St. Ann and St. Elizabeth. By 1814, there were 600 coffee plantations on the Island . But after the abolition of slavery, they created a shortage of labor and a decline in the coffee production. The harvesting of coffee is purely labor intensive, because the beans are handpicked. By 1850, only 186 coffee plantations were in operation. Then the coffee industry was in a general disarray, so the legislation was passed to provide an instruction in the art of cultivation.

Finally in the year 1944, the Jamaican government established a Central Coffee Clearing House where all the coffee is processed for export. The cleaning and grading process is the important step in the improvement of the quality Jamaican coffee. So it is too expensive and the Demand is high. Generally, it is extremely labor intensive as each cherry has to be individually hand-picked on dangerous mountainous terrain. But the beans are naturally sweet with an excellent aroma which is derived from the volcanic soil.

The favorable sunny climate penetrates into the low hanging clouds to ripen each coffee cherry and to create the required flavor. The Blue Mountain coffee is made exclusively from the Arabic Bean, which is more fragile to grow the considered flavorful bean and has less caffeine than the Robusta Bean. T

Then after reaping, the coffee is pulped and washed at a pulperie in the wet parchment which produces the aroma ted coffee beans. The Jamaica is one of the few countries which allows the "wet parchment" for a minimum of six weeks. The coffee undergoes the quality control measures including the appearance checks and cup testing to ensure the cup- quality of the beans.
